About: Ms. Enhui Hu (1917 – 1989), is the late grandmother of Prof. Jia Grace Lu in the Physics Department at the University of Southern California. She was a mainstay pillar of her family and community as a supportive spouse, nurturing mother, and loving grandmother. During the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, it was her steady presence of courage, resilience, and strength that got her family through the ten years of nightmare, suffering, and tragedies. Yet, she did not confine herself to the well being of her own family. Instead, she carved herself a role as an advocate for education, and worked tirelessly as a community literacy volunteer, helping the marginalized women to learn to read and write.
Born as the first child to Chinese parents of Christian faith, her birth was considered to be an act of the grace of God. Hence her name Enhui, which means Grace in Chinese. As a young girl, Enhui dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. That dream, unfortunately, was cut short with the unexpected death of her uncle, himself in medical science. Eventually she became an English teacher before she married Professor Wenqi Wu who was a prominent linguist in China. She understood the importance of having extended tutorial conversations and discussions between the professor and the students and junior faculty members who came to seek advices at their residence. She would often have meals prepared for those young visitors. Her genuine concern for their academic progress, and her non-judgmental attitude towards their general development drew the youngsters to her as their counsel. She would always encourage the young to live up to their dreams by maximizing their own potential. Ms. Enhui Hu was a woman of integrity, honesty, and compassion. She respected and accepted all people regardless of their social or economic standing. She was especially sympathetic to the less fortunate, be it caused by a physical handicap or poverty. Her self - effacing personality made her never to seek any spot light, not to expect rewards, or even to ask for an acknowledgement for her contribution to the students, the university community, and the less privileged families. She did what she did naturally, and gave what she had willingly and whole-heartedly. This scholarship is dedicated to Ms. Enhui Hu in the memory for her encouragement, enlightenment and unconditional love. |
